What to Pack for a Trip to South Africa + Outfit Inspiration
YOU’RE GOING TO SOUTH AFRICA — YAY! 🇿🇦✨
Cape Town's colorful neighborhoods. World-class wineries. Big Five safaris. Golden sunsets over the bush. Penguin beaches. Incredible food. Luxury lodges you'll never want to leave.
South Africa is one of my favorite countries in the world because it truly feels like several completely different vacations rolled into one.
One day you're sipping wine beneath centuries-old oak trees in the Winelands. The next you're spotting elephants from an open safari vehicle. Then you're wandering Cape Town's beautiful streets before ending the evening with one of the best dinners of your life.
And that's exactly why packing for South Africa can feel a little overwhelming.
Unlike many destinations where you can throw a few dresses into a suitcase and call it a day, South Africa requires you to pack for several completely different experiences, each with its own vibe, weather, and wardrobe.
Whether you're joining one of our Group Galavants or planning your own Private Galavant, this guide will help you pack smart, understand what you actually need (and what you definitely don't), and feel prepared for everything from Cape Town cocktails to sunrise game drives.
Before You Start Packing...
Before we dive into the packing list, there are a few things worth mentioning.
One of the biggest misconceptions about packing for South Africa is that every safari comes with strict luggage restrictions and requires a soft-sided duffel bag.
While that's absolutely true for some safaris, particularly in destinations like Kenya and Botswana where you'll often fly between camps on small bush planes, it isn't true for every trip.
Many South African itineraries (including our Group Galavants) travel between destinations by commercial flights or road transfers, meaning you can typically bring a regular hard-sided suitcase without worrying about squeezing everything into a tiny duffel.
As an overpacker, this is one of my favorite things about safari in South Africa. 😂
Of course, every itinerary is different, so always double-check your luggage requirements before you pack. If you're traveling with us, don't worry, we've already designed our itinerary with this in mind, so you can pack a little more comfortably.
☀️ This guide is written for shoulder season travel.
Because South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are the opposite of those in North America and Europe.
This guide is based on packing for April or October, which are two of our favorite times to visit. The weather is generally beautiful, wildlife viewing is excellent, and you'll avoid much of the peak-season crowds while still enjoying fantastic conditions throughout Cape Town, the Winelands, and safari.
If you're visiting during the height of summer (December through February) or winter (June through August), you may want to tweak a few pieces, but the vast majority of this guide will still apply.
The South Africa Style Guide
If I had to describe South African style in three words, it would be:
Relaxed. Refined. Adventurous.
Cape Town and the Winelands are effortlessly stylish. Think linen dresses, chic sneakers, elevated basics, beautiful handbags, and outfits you'd happily wear wandering Europe or heading to a winery.
Safari, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.
Game drives start before sunrise, temperatures can swing dramatically throughout the day, and functionality becomes just as important as style.
The good news? You don't need to dress like you're starring in an episode of National Geographic (unless you want to!!).
Think elevated safari style rather than full explorer costume.
As you're packing, I want you to think about four different moments throughout your trip:
🏙️ Exploring Cape Town
🍷 Wine tasting in the Cape Winelands
🦁 Early morning and evening safari game drives
✨ Beautiful dinners at luxury lodges and boutique hotels
Most of your Cape Town and Winelands wardrobe will probably look similar to what you'd pack for Italy, Croatia, or southern France.
Safari is where your packing list starts to shift toward layers, comfortable shoes, neutral colors, and practical pieces that can handle dusty roads, chilly mornings, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Thankfully, with a little planning, many of your pieces can pull double duty, meaning you won't need an entirely separate suitcase just for safari.
Pro Tips Before You Start Packing
PRO TIP #1: Copy the packing list at the bottom of this post into the Notes app on your phone so you can easily reference it while shopping and packing.
PRO TIP #2: Want to elevate your looks without buying a whole new wardrobe? I swear by rental services for trips like this.
Nuuly is my favorite clothing rental service, especially size-inclusive and great for boho silhouettes. You’ll get $30 off your first month when you use my referral link.
Rent the Runway is my go-to for statement dresses and flowy pieces (use code RTRALLEP for 40% off two months).

1. Packable Puffer Jacket
Do not underestimate how cold those early morning game drives can be. You may be going to Africa, but when you're sitting in an open safari vehicle before sunrise, that chill hits differently. A lightweight packable puffer (in a neutral color) is warm without taking over your suitcase, and you'll be very happy you brought it when the alarm goes off before dawn. Choose one you can easily peel off once the sun comes up and the temperature starts climbing.
2. Neutral Safari Separates
This might be the only time I encourage you to wear neutrals haha and on Safari, it’s a must. This is the moment to embrace khaki, olive, tan, cream, brown, and other earthy shades. You don't need to buy an entirely new safari wardrobe, but a few neutral tops, lightweight pants, and easy layers will make getting dressed incredibly simple. These colors blend into the surroundings, hide dust better than bright white, and give you that effortlessly chic safari look without feeling like you're wearing a costume.
3. Easy Vacation Dresses
Cape Town and the Winelands are where your regular vacation wardrobe gets to shine. Think easy midi and maxi dresses that work for winery lunches, city exploring, cocktails, and beautiful dinners. I love pieces that can be worn with sneakers or sandals during the day and dressed up with earrings or a great bag at night. Bonus points for wrinkle-resistant fabrics because, once again, ironing is not happening on vacation (at least I won’t be doing it haha).
And I'll say it again, renting from Nuuly is such a fun option if you want a few special vacation pieces without buying a whole new wardrobe. Here's my code for $30 off your first month (you're welcome 😉).
4. Comfortable Safari Boots
A comfortable pair of combat boots is one of my favorite things to pack for safari. These are not essential (you could easily be just fine in sneakers). But I like to have my ankles covered to protect from bug bites + having something sturdy enough for dusty paths and bush walks, but comfortable enough to wear for hours without thinking about your feet. These are usually the only pair of shoes I wear on safari. You do not need heavy-duty hiking boots for most luxury South African safaris; a practical, broken-in pair with good traction will do the job beautifully. Please do not make safari the maiden voyage for brand-new boots.
5. Wide Brimmed Hat
A wide-brimmed hat is equal parts practical and fabulous, which is exactly what we want. It helps protect your face and shoulders from the strong South African sun while instantly making even the simplest safari outfit feel pulled together. Look for one that stays securely on your head, packs reasonably well, and won't go flying out of the vehicle the moment your ranger picks up speed.
6. Lightweight Layers
South Africa is a layering destination, especially when safari is part of the itinerary. Mornings can begin surprisingly cold, afternoons may feel warm and sunny, and the temperature can drop again as soon as the sun disappears. Pack lightweight sweaters, long-sleeved tops, button-downs, and jackets that can easily be added or removed throughout the day. The goal is to be prepared without looking like you're carrying your entire closet into the safari vehicle.
7. Comfortable Walking Shoes
Between Cape Town, hotel grounds, markets, scenic stops, and the occasional airport sprint, a comfortable pair of sneakers will earn its place in your suitcase. Choose something supportive enough for a full day of exploring but polished enough to wear with dresses, linen pants, and matching sets. South Africa isn't the trip for flimsy shoes that look cute for eleven minutes and then ruin your entire day.
8. Swimsuit & Coverup
Even when safari mornings are chilly, South African afternoons can be beautifully warm and many luxury lodges and hotels have pools you'll absolutely want to enjoy. Pack at least one swimsuit and a cover-up that you can toss on after a game drive or long day of wine tasting. A chic button-down, kaftan, or matching set can take you from the pool to lunch without needing a full outfit change.
9.Great Sunglasses
Between the African sun, open safari vehicles, coastal drives, and long afternoons in the Winelands, great sunglasses are non-negotiable. Bring a pair that offers real protection, feels comfortable enough to wear for hours, and stays securely on your face. I would also avoid bringing the most precious pair you own, the bush has a way of coating absolutely everything in a fine layer of dust.
What to Wear in Cape Town & The Winelands
Easy Vacation Dresses
Cape Town and the Winelands are made for an easy vacation dress. Think styles you can wear with sneakers while exploring the city or flat sandals for a long winery lunch. I love packing midi and maxi dresses that feel comfortable during the day but can easily be dressed up with jewelry and a great bag later.
Matching Sets
A matching set is one of my favorite ways to look instantly put together without actually trying that hard. They're perfect for everything from sightseeing in Cape Town to a leisurely afternoon in the Winelands. Look for lightweight linen or cotton sets that you can wear together or mix and match with other pieces throughout your trip.
Lightweight Pants or Skirts
Lightweight pants and skirts are perfect when you want something a little more versatile than a dress. Pair them with a simple tank or blouse for exploring Cape Town, wine tastings, or lunch in the Winelands. Linen, cotton, and other breathable fabrics are ideal, especially pieces that can transition easily from daytime adventures to cocktails later.
Elevated Basics
A few great blouses and elevated basics will give you endless outfit combinations without taking up much room in your suitcase. Think linen button-downs, polished tanks, and lightweight tops that work with pants, skirts, or jeans. They're especially useful for days when the weather changes and you want something easy to layer with a jacket or cardigan.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you want to elevate your outfits for this trip without overbuying, I highly recommend renting through Nuuly. It’s my favorite rental service for travel; the selection is incredible, the pieces feel modern and wearable, and it’s also much more size-inclusive (owned by Anthropologie and Free People). I rent from them constantly and love how easy it is to experiment with bold, flowy styles that are perfect for South Africa. If you use this link, you’ll get $30 off your first month.
Rent the Runway is another great option, especially if you’re looking for more formal or statement pieces. It’s been a longtime travel favorite of mine, and you can use my code RTRALLEP for 40% off two months.
What to Wear in the Evenings in Cape Town & The Winelands
A Light Layer
Evenings in South Africa can get surprisingly cool, especially during the shoulder seasons and once the sun goes down. I always pack a lightweight jacket, cardigan, or wrap that I can throw over a dress without ruining the look. It's one of those pieces you may not need every night, but you'll be very happy to have it when you do.
Elevated Separates
Not every evening calls for a dress, which is where elevated separates come in. A great pair of trousers or a midi skirt paired with a beautiful top is perfect for dinners in Cape Town, the Winelands, or even back at your safari lodge. Choose pieces you can mix and match so you're getting multiple outfits from your suitcase.
A Fun Statement Look
South Africa has some incredible restaurants, so you'll definitely want a few dresses that feel special enough for a beautiful night out. Think fun prints, gorgeous colors, or a silhouette you absolutely love. You don't need anything overly formal, just those vacation dresses that make you feel fabulous the second you put them on.
And if you’re wondering what to wear at night on Safari… Literally the same clothes you wore on your Game Drive 😉
What to Wear on Safari
Neutral Separates
Safari is definitely the time to lean into those classic neutral colors like khaki, olive, tan, cream, and brown. Think easy tops, button-downs, and pieces you can mix and match without much thought. You don't need to dress like you're starring in Out of Africa (or you can if you’re like me haha) just comfortable pieces that feel practical, polished, and at home in the bush.
Comfortable Pants
Comfort is key when you're spending several hours bouncing around in an open safari vehicle. I love lightweight utility pants, joggers, or leggings that give you plenty of room to move and can be worn more than once. Skip anything too precious because safari can be dusty, and this is definitely not the moment for your favorite white linen pants.
A Puffer Jacket
Trust me on this one: pack the puffer jacket. Those sunrise game drives can be surprisingly cold when you're sitting in an open vehicle with the wind hitting you before you've even had your second coffee. Choose something lightweight and packable that keeps you warm in the morning but can easily be tucked away once the African sun comes out.
Lightweight Layers
The number one rule of dressing for safari? Layers, layers, layers. A morning game drive can start out freezing, warm up considerably once the sun rises, and then cool right back down on an evening drive. Pack lightweight long sleeves, sweaters, or fleeces that you can easily add or remove without taking up too much space in the vehicle.
South Africa Shoes & Accessories
See something you love? You'll find links to every item featured in this guide HERE.
1 . Safari Boots
A comfortable pair of safari boots is worth every inch of suitcase space. They're perfect for game drives, bush walks, and dusty lodge paths, and you definitely don't need heavy hiking boots. Just make sure they're broken in before your trip!
2.Versatile Sandals
Bring one pair of sandals or flats that can easily transition from wine tastings to beautiful dinners. I'd leave the heels at home, South Africa isn't as cobblestoned as Europe, but comfort always wins when you're traveling. I think Dolce Vita or DV By Dolce Vita have some of the best sandals that can be dressed up or down.
3. Comfortable Sneakers
Between Cape Town, the Winelands, airports, and sightseeing, you'll be doing plenty of walking. Pack a pair of comfortable sneakers that can easily be worn with dresses, matching sets, or pants so you're reaching for them day after day.
4. Binoculars
If safari is part of your trip, a good pair of binoculars is absolutely worth bringing. They make spotting wildlife even more magical, especially birds and animals farther in the distance. Not sure what to buy? Check out our What You Need to Know Before Your First Safari guide, where we break down exactly what to look for.
5. A Lightweight Scarf
A lightweight scarf is one of the most versatile accessories you can pack. It's perfect for adding a little extra warmth on chilly morning game drives, wrapping around your shoulders on cool evenings, or simply elevating a simple travel outfit. And yay! If you're joining us on our South Africa Galavant, you'll also receive one of our custom South Africa scarves as a special surprise, so you'll have the perfect layer (and souvenir!) to wear throughout the trip. 🦁✨
6. A Crossbody Bag
For days when you don't need to bring quite as much, a small crossbody is ideal. It's perfect for exploring Cape Town, wandering the Winelands, or heading out to dinner when you just need your phone, wallet, and a few essentials.
7. A Carry-All Bag
A roomy carry-all is perfect for safari vehicles and full sightseeing days when you want extra layers, sunscreen, binoculars, a water bottle, and all your other little essentials close by. Look for something lightweight, easy to carry, and not too precious.
South Africa Toiletries & Travel Essentials
Bug Spray
If safari is part of your trip, insect repellent is non-negotiable. You'll often be outside around sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active, so come prepared! Whether you prefer a traditional spray, plant-based option, or want to layer in mosquito patches or bracelets, try a few options and find what works best for you.
Lip Balm with SPF
Between the African sun, dry air, and hours spent in an open safari vehicle, your lips can get surprisingly dry. A lip balm with SPF keeps them hydrated while adding that extra layer of sun protection. It's one of those little things you'll find yourself reaching for constantly throughout the trip.
Hydrating Moisturizer
Between the sun, wind, dry air, and dusty game drives, your skin can definitely need a little extra love on safari. I always pack a rich moisturizer or hydrating face mask to replenish all that lost moisture. Trust me, your skin will be very happy to see it after a long day in the bush.
Supergoop! SPF
A solid travel sunscreen kit is non-negotiable for a trip to South Africa, and Supergoop! is hands-down my favorite. These formulas are lightweight, never greasy, and actually sink into your skin (no gloopy SPF here). I love that this set covers face and body. Perfect for packing, pool days, and long sightseeing days in the sun.
ILIA Serum+ SPF 40
I swear by this; it’s my go-to lightweight base when I travel. It gives just enough coverage without feeling heavy, making it perfect for early morning Game Drives when foundation feels like too much. I wear shade Morgat ST 11.5, but I recommend getting color-matched at Sephora or Ulta to find your best fit.
Undereye Patches
These eye patches are a must for long flights or early Game Drive mornings (seriously lol). They’re perfect for de-puffing, brightening, and refreshing tired eyes in minutes. I love tossing them in my carry-on for a quick pick-me-up before landing or heading out for the day.
Deodorant Wipes
These deodorant wipes are a lifesaver on Game Drive or long touring days when you need a quick refresh. They remove sweat and odor while actually hydrating your skin (no sticky residue), making them perfect to keep in your day bag. I love having a few on hand for mid-day resets, especially in warm weather.
Touchland Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is an absolute essential for South Africa; I always carry a few to toss in my tote, crossbody, and carry-on. This one is a favorite because it keeps hands clean without drying them out, and it actually leaves your skin feeling refreshed instead of stripped. Perfect for sightseeing days and moments when a sink isn’t nearby.
IGK Texture Spray
If you’re trying to streamline your travel hair routine, this will be your new BFF. It’s a salt-free texture spray that adds serious volume and flexible hold, perfect for that effortless “I just left the beach” look, no hot tools or extra products required.
Universal Travel Adapter
South Africa uses a few different plug types, so a universal travel adapter is an absolute must. I love one with multiple USB ports so you can charge your phone, watch, camera, and everything else at once. Just make sure the one you buy specifically lists South Africa as compatible!
Portable Charger
Between game drives, long touring days, and taking approximately 5,000 photos of elephants, your phone battery is going to get a workout. A portable charger is one of those things I never travel without. Keep it charged and tucked in your day bag so you're never desperately searching for an outlet.
Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is especially important when you're spending long days outside, and a reusable water bottle is so easy to keep with you. Bring it along for game drives, touring days, and transfers, and refill whenever you can. I love an insulated one that keeps water cold for hours in the South African sun.
