YOU’RE GOING TO THE EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS — YAY! 🎄✨
Twinkling Christmas lights. Cozy winter coats. Steaming mugs of Glühwein. Charming cobblestone streets. Snow-dusted rooftops (fingers crossed!). Festive markets. And if you’re going with us Gals…Champagne aboard a luxury river cruise!
There's something about Europe at Christmastime that feels straight out of a Hallmark movie. From Vienna's grand boulevards to Budapest's sparkling skyline, every city seems to be dressed up for the holidays, and honestly, I can't think of a more magical time to visit.
The best part? Winter travel is the perfect excuse to embrace all things cozy, chic, and festive!
Think fabulous coats, chunky sweaters, warm scarves, stylish boots, thermal layers, and a few sparkly pieces for those special holiday dinners. We're going for European winter chic, but we are NOT sacrificing warmth for fashion. Absolutely not. 😂
Whether you're joining our Christmas on the Danube Galavant or planning your own European Christmas market adventure, this guide will help you pack smart, stay warm, avoid overpacking (we can try!), and feel fabulous from your first mug of Glühwein to your final Christmas market stroll.
The European Christmas Market Style Guide
If I had to describe European Christmas market style in three words, it would be:
Cozy. Chic. Festive.
The goal is to look effortlessly put together while staying genuinely warm. Think beautiful winter coats, chunky knits, tailored trousers, cozy accessories, and layers you can add or remove as you move between chilly outdoor markets and warm restaurants, museums, and cafés.
As you're packing, you'll want to think about four different moments throughout your trip:
🎄 Exploring Christmas markets & cobblestone streets
🍷 Wine tastings, festive lunches & cozy cafés
❄️ Winter sightseeing, palaces & outdoor adventures
✨ Champagne evenings & fabulous dinners aboard the ship (if you’re on a river cruise)
The beauty of winter dressing is that you can build several outfits around a few great pieces. A fabulous coat instantly elevates just about anything, and swapping your everyday sweater for a dressier knit, adding statement earrings, or throwing on a festive scarf can take you from Christmas market wandering to dinner without needing an entirely new outfit.
And yes, you can absolutely leave the heels at home. Those cobblestones are no joke, especially when they're wet or icy!
Pro Tips Before You Start Packing
PRO TIP #1: Copy the packing list at the bottom of this post into the Notes app on your phone so you can easily reference it while shopping and packing. And trust me, layers are going to be your BEST FRIEND on this trip!
PRO TIP #2: Want to elevate your winter wardrobe without buying a whole new closet? I swear by rental services for trips like this, especially for statement coats, cozy sweaters, and festive dinner looks.
Nuuly is my favorite clothing rental service, especially size-inclusive and great for boho silhouettes. You’ll get $30 off your first month when you use my referral link.
Rent the Runway is my go-to for statement dresses and flowy pieces (use code RTRALLEP for 40% off two months).

1. A Fabulous Statement Coat
If there's ever a trip to invest in (or rent!) a fabulous winter coat, THIS IS IT. Your coat is going to be in approximately 97% of your vacation photos, so you might as well LOVE it. Think long wool coats, gorgeous faux-fur styles, or chic insulated puffers in festive colors. Just remember that warmth comes first. A beautiful wool coat might look incredible, but you'll want something insulated and preferably weather-resistant for those extra-chilly or damp days. Bonus points if your coat is roomy enough to layer a chunky sweater underneath.
And I'll say it again, renting from Nuuly is such a fun option if you want a few special vacation pieces without buying a whole new wardrobe. Here's my code for $30 off your first month (you're welcome 😉).
2. Thermal Base Layers
Want to know how people manage to look effortlessly chic while wandering European Christmas markets in freezing temperatures? THERMALS, BABY! A good set of thermal leggings and a fitted long-sleeve top can make the difference between enjoying another mug of Glühwein and desperately searching for somewhere warm. I especially love thin merino wool or heat-retaining base layers that fit comfortably underneath trousers, jeans, sweaters, and even dresses. They add warmth without making you look like the Michelin Man. Trust me, these are going to be your best friends.
3. Cozy Sweaters & Knits
Christmas markets and cozy sweaters are basically a love story. I'm talking chunky cable knits, soft turtlenecks, oversized cardigans, and those gorgeous winter sweaters that make you want to curl up by a fireplace with a glass of red wine. The trick is packing a few versatile sweaters you can mix and match, rather than bringing a different bulky knit for every single day. Look for wool, cashmere, or warm blends that actually insulate, and build outfits around a few complementary colors. A beautiful cream turtleneck can go from sightseeing to dinner with a simple jewelry change. We love an outfit that multitasks!
4. Bandolier Phone Case
I NEVER travel without a Bandolier phone case. These are fantastic because they have a pouch on the back of the case for your money and ID, so you have everything all in one place. They also have fun clip-ons like this that hold your AirPods. Wearing this at the airport when your hands are always full is truly a game-changer. I also love this small woman-owned company that makes SUPER cute wristlet chains that I like to pair with my Bandolier case (shoutout to our Gals Meg & Suzanne for turning us onto this brand).
5. Waterproof Boots w/ Good Grip
If you take ONE piece of packing advice from this entire guide, let it be this: your shoes are EVERYTHING. Between wet cobblestones, potentially icy sidewalks, and hours of wandering Christmas markets, you need boots that can actually handle winter weather. Look for waterproof or water-resistant boots with rubber soles, serious traction, and enough room for warm socks. I love a chic Chelsea boot or a stylish lace-up winter boot that doesn't scream I'm about to climb Mount Everest. And PLEASE break them in before the trip.
6. A Packable Tote
Listen, we all know what's going to happen. You're going to tell yourself you're just browsing, and suddenly you've purchased six handmade ornaments, a Christmas decoration for your co-worker, some chocolates, and a gift for someone you haven't even met yet. 😂 That's why I ALWAYS recommend packing a lightweight, foldable tote for market shopping. It takes up practically zero space in your suitcase and gives you somewhere to stash your treasures throughout the day.
BONUS TIP: Leave some extra room in your luggage for the journey home. European Christmas markets are dangerously good at convincing you that you need one more souvenir. And honestly? You probably do.
7. A Cute Hat, Scarves & Gloves
Consider this your official permission slip to go ALL IN on adorable winter accessories. A chunky knit beanie, an oversized scarf, and a great pair of gloves are absolute necessities for outdoor Christmas market adventures. I especially recommend touchscreen-compatible gloves so you can take approximately 500 photos without exposing your fingers to the cold every five seconds. And don't underestimate the power of a fabulous scarf! It adds warmth, brings color to your outfits, and instantly makes a simple coat feel more styled. Extra points for a matching set. Very European Christmas movie heroine.
8. Warm Socks & Fleece-Lined Tights
I cannot emphasize this enough: COLD FEET = BAD TIME. 😂 Invest in several pairs of warm wool or merino-blend socks that wick moisture away and keep your toes cozy during long days exploring. Cotton socks are not your friend if your feet get damp! And if you're planning to wear skirts or dresses, fleece-lined tights are an absolute game-changer. You can look like you're wearing regular sheer tights while secretly enjoying a cozy layer of warmth. I also love packing a pair of thick, comfortable socks to wear around the ship when it's time to kick off those boots.
9.A Hands-Free Crossbody Bag
Between holding a steaming mug of Glühwein, browsing Christmas ornaments, taking photos, and inevitably buying things you absolutely don't need, you're going to want BOTH hands available. A great crossbody bag is one of my favorite travel essentials, especially for busy Christmas markets. Look for something that zips securely, sits close to your body, and has enough room for your phone, wallet, lip balm, gloves, and a portable charger. I personally love a chic crossbody that works with both casual daytime outfits and dressier evening looks. Practical AND cute? Sign me up.
What to Wear during the Day
A Fabulous Winter Coat
Your coat is going to be the star of your Christmas market wardrobe, so make it a good one! Think long wool coats, chic insulated puffers, or something in a gorgeous burgundy or chocolate brown. Just make sure it's actually WARM because we'll be spending plenty of time outdoors, and your coat will be in approximately 97% of your vacation photos!
Cozy Sweaters & Turtlenecks
A great sweater is one of the most versatile pieces you can pack for winter in Europe. I love soft turtlenecks, chunky cable knits, and cozy cashmere sweaters. Stick to a few complementary colors so you can mix and match throughout the trip, and pack a couple of thinner knits for layering underneath your coat.
A Variety of Warm Bottoms
Think warmth, comfort, and versatility! I love packing a mix of tailored trousers, comfortable jeans, and thicker leggings that can be dressed up or down. Make sure you can layer thermals underneath for extra-chilly days. And if you're bringing skirts or dresses, fleece-lined tights are an absolute MUST. Frozen legs? Absolutely not.
Chic Winter Matching Sets
Matching sets are one of my favorite travel hacks! Think cozy knit sets, sweater-and-trouser combinations, or elevated lounge sets that look polished with almost zero effort. They're perfect for travel days, casual sightseeing, or relaxing aboard the ship. Plus, you can wear the pieces separately for even more outfit combinations!

What to Wear in the Evenings
Elevated Cozy Layers
One of the best parts of river cruising is coming back to the ship, warming up, and enjoying a fabulous dinner without needing to get overly dressed up. I love a beautiful cashmere sweater, chic cardigan, or elevated knit paired with trousers and statement earrings. Add a glass of Champagne, and you're ready for the evening!
A Dinner Outfit You Love
Between our private Galavant Society dinner in Vienna and evenings aboard the Mozart, you'll want a few dressier options. Think sweater dresses, chic trousers with a silky blouse, or a simple black dress with tights and boots. No formalwear necessary, just something that makes you feel fabulous while enjoying a wonderful meal and one more glass of wine.
Something Festive & Fab
If there was ever a trip to embrace a little holiday sparkle, THIS IS IT! Think velvet, sequins, satin, metallic accessories, or that fabulous holiday outfit you've been waiting to wear. We're planning a festive farewell dinner aboard the Mozart, so bring something that makes you feel extra special. And yes, sequins are absolutely encouraged! ✨
MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you want to elevate your winter wardrobe without buying a whole new closet, I highly recommend renting through Nuuly. It's my favorite rental service for travel, especially for fabulous statement coats, cozy sweaters, chic knits, and fun holiday pieces. The selection is incredible, and it's also much more size-inclusive (owned by Anthropologie and Free People). I rent from them constantly and LOVE being able to experiment with festive winter looks without committing to pieces I might only wear a few times. If you use this link, you’ll get $30 off your first month.
Rent the Runway is another great option, especially if you’re looking for more formal or statement pieces. It’s been a longtime travel favorite of mine, and you can use my code RTRALLEP for 40% off two months.
A Few Extras for Winter in Europe…
A Warm Hat, Scarf & Gloves
These are nonnegotiable for Christmas market season! A cozy beanie, oversized scarf, and warm gloves will make those chilly afternoons so much more enjoyable. I especially recommend touchscreen gloves so you can take photos without freezing your fingers. Plus, a fabulous scarf is an easy way to change up your look when you're wearing the same coat every day!
Thermal Base Layers
Here's the secret to staying warm without looking like you're wearing seventeen sweaters: THERMALS! Pack lightweight thermal tops and leggings that disappear underneath your regular outfits. Merino wool and heat-retaining fabrics are especially great for adding warmth without bulk. Trust me, you'll be VERY happy you brought these on chilly Christmas market days.
Waterproof Boots
I cannot stress this enough: your footwear will MAKE OR BREAK this trip. Between cobblestones, wet sidewalks, and potentially icy conditions, you need comfortable, weather-resistant boots with genuinely good grip. Look for rubber soles with traction and room for warm socks.
A Chic Crossbody Bag
You'll want to be hands-free while juggling Glühwein, taking photos, and shopping for Christmas ornaments you absolutely don't need. 😂 I love a sleek crossbody that holds your phone, wallet, lip balm, and essentials. Choose something that works with your winter coat and transitions easily from sightseeing to dinner.
Christmas Market Shoes & Accessories
See something you love? You'll find links to every item featured in this guide HERE.
1 . Waterproof Winter Boots
If you buy ONE thing for this trip, make it a great pair of waterproof winter boots! Look for something with good traction, plenty of support, and room for warm socks. Between cobblestones, chilly temperatures, and potentially slippery sidewalks, your feet will THANK YOU.
2.Day to Night Boots
Having a chic boot that can take you from Christmas markets to dinner is PERFECT for this trip. I love a sleek leather ankle boot or a polished knee-high style that works with trousers, sweater dresses, and skirts. Just make sure they're comfortable enough for walking and have a good rubber sole. And yes, I'd leave the heels at home... icy cobblestones and stilettos are NOT a combination we need in our lives.
3. Faux Fur Accessories
If there was ever a trip to embrace a little faux fur, THIS IS IT! Think fabulous earmuffs, a cozy collar, or a chic stole that instantly elevates your winter coat. They're perfect for adding a little personality without packing another bulky coat. Very European winter princess. We LOVE her.
4. Rechargeable Hand Warmers
Okay, these might not be glamorous, but TRUST ME! Rechargeable hand warmers are a game-changer when you're spending hours outside at Christmas markets. Slip one into your coat pocket for toasty hands while sipping Glühwein and shopping for ornaments. Some even double as phone chargers!
5. Touchscreen Gloves
A fabulous pair of leather gloves is one of those accessories that makes any winter outfit feel instantly more polished. I love a chic, fleece-lined pair that keeps your hands warm without being bulky. BONUS POINTS for touchscreen fingertips so you can take approximately 500 Christmas market photos without freezing your fingers!
6. A Festive Evening Bag
Christmas is the PERFECT excuse to have fun with your accessories! Think velvet, sequins, metallic gold, or a gorgeous burgundy mini bag. It's one of the easiest ways to elevate a simple black dress or sweater-and-trouser outfit for dinner. Bonus: it takes up practically zero suitcase space!
7. Fleece-Lined Tights
If you're planning to wear dresses or skirts, these are a GAME-CHANGER! I love fleece-lined tights that look like regular sheer black tights but secretly keep your legs SO warm. Pair them with a sweater dress and knee-high boots for the cutest winter look without sacrificing comfort. Very chic. Very sneaky.
Christmas Market Toiletries & Beauty Essentials ❄️
Ultra-Hydrating Face Moisturizer
Cold winter air and heated hotel rooms can absolutely WRECK your skin. I always pack a rich, hydrating moisturizer to keep my face feeling soft and happy throughout the trip. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides that help lock in moisture. Trust me, your skin will THANK YOU.
Hydrating Lip Balm
If there's one beauty product you'll be reaching for constantly at Christmas markets, it's a really good lip balm. Between chilly winds, dry air, and all those mugs of Glühwein, your lips can get chapped FAST. I love a thick, nourishing formula that keeps them soft without needing to reapply every five minutes.
Undereye Patches
These eye patches are a must for long flights and early mornings exploring Europe. They're perfect for de-puffing, hydrating, and refreshing tired eyes in minutes. I love tossing them in my carry-on for a little pick-me-up before landing or getting ready for a fabulous dinner aboard the Mozart. PS - Code: ALLEP15 will take 15% off your order.
A Rich Hand Cream
Your hands are going to need some EXTRA love on this trip! Between cold temperatures, frequent handwashing, and dry winter air, a nourishing hand cream is an absolute essential. I love keeping a travel-sized tube in my crossbody so I can moisturize throughout the day. Bonus points for a fabulous holiday scent!
Touchland Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is an absolute essential when you're wandering busy Christmas markets, shopping for ornaments, and grabbing festive treats. Touchland is one of my favorites because it's convenient, smells amazing, and doesn't leave my hands feeling stripped. I always keep one in my crossbody for those moments when a sink isn't nearby.
Anti-Frizz Hair Serum
Between winter hats, scarves, cold air, and heated indoor spaces, your hair might have a mind of its own. 😂 I love packing a lightweight anti-frizz serum or hair oil to tame flyaways, smooth static, and add a little shine. It's the easiest way to refresh your hair after spending the afternoon bundled up at Christmas markets.
